The Right Time to Pay Models....?

I'd like to know everyone's opinion from photographers, to models, anyone within the industry, when is the right time to start paying a model to model?

In my opinion (even as inexperienced photographer that I am) as a business person I don't invest into anything unless I know for sure I'm getting money back or it is likely to bring in money of some sort. I will not pay any models to model for me unless I'm selling the work created from the production we've worked on for currency/cash incentives, i.e. stock photography, magazines/published, etc. As for paying a model who is much more experienced than I am for the opportunity to have that model on my portfolio yea sure but thats when I know I could afford to and I know the exposure from their fans (if they have a fan base) will strongly benefit me.

  1. When it come come to paying models it comes down to 3 things really.
    1. Are you getting paid for it? if so then yes you should offer to pay the model at the least.
    2. Travel if a model is traveling to work with you and its just for fun then you should help them with travel even it lunch, gas and a pack of smokes.
    3. How much to you want to work with that model there are a few models that I am vary willing to pay to work with 1 b/c they are really just stunning and 2 b/c I think that they can teach me something. But this is just me. Make it clear what you are paying the model for at times they will work with you sometimes for TFCD or something like that

  2. Yes, thats why right now I only work with TF models who are looking for TF work. As for Paid Only Models on Model Mayhem I avoid them or when they approach me on MM I just tell them I'm not looking for paid models right now because I'm still building my portfolio. As for when I know I'm going to sell the photos ether via stock photography or other commercial areas to potentially profit from the images generated from the photo shoot that is when I'll pay the model(s).
